NEWARK AIRPORT BUILDING A NEW TERMINAL TO RELIEVE CONGESTION

A $2.7 billion project is underway at Newark Liberty International Airport to replace one of its oldest and existing terminals and help catapult the airport city into the next century.

The million-square-foot Terminal One, as it will be called, will replace the antiquated Terminal A, which has been around since 1972, said Catherine Cronin, program director of redevelopment at Newark Airport.

She said Terminal One will have a more modern feel, more technology embedded in it and more access to Wi-Fi. Visitors will be able to get through security faster with a centralized security checkpoint. There also will be more of the mobile check-in pods.

«We’re going to be able to build it off to the southern portion of the airport, an entirely new roadway network, which will keep you out of the traffic for folks going to Terminal B and Terminal C,» she said.

Cronin said local content will be provided so you know you are at a New Jersey terminal. Some of that includes farm-fresh type food. There will be entertainment and shopping.

They’re also working to make sure there’s plenty of things for people to do while they are waiting to board their plane, just like at other terminals that have been built recently, said Cronin. There’s art programs happening, they want to make sure they’re incorporating things in the New Jersey Hall of Fame and input from other local artists and performers.

Terminal One will also help relieve congestion at baggage claim, check-in and security areas, said Cronin. There will be 18 check-in lanes that will serve the entire terminal plus all new modern  technology that processes much faster.

Baggage claim will have a larger hall for passengers to circulate and exit.

The project on the roadway component started last year. This past April, the airport gave notice to the contractor to proceed. Part of Terminal One should be completed in 2021 but the entire project should be done in 2022.

Cronin said the airport staged it so they can move the airlines out of Concourse A1 and A2 into the terminal, allowing them to finish the air field that requires the demolition of the concourses. Then they will move the final airlines in 2022 and demolish Concourse A3.

Terminal One will serve 13.6 million fliers through 33 gates and a new parking garage. It’s also expected to create more than 23,000 jobs.

While Terminal One is being built, Cronin said they don’t want to neglect the existing Terminal A. The construction should not impact customers going through Terminal A.

New terminal for international departures at Hyderabad Airport to open on Oct 23

The Interim International Departure Terminal at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad will be made operational on October 23.

According to GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), the airport operator, all international departure flights will operate from this terminal with effect from 10:30 am on October 23.

IIDT, which has been built to facilitate airport’s expansion, is located adjacent to the Haj Terminal and can be accessed from both Shamshabad and Srisailam sides of the airport’s main approach road via Rotary 1 (Cargo rotary).

The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is projected to handle 20 million passengers during the current financial year as it embarks on an expansion that will take its overall capacity to 40 million passengers per annum.

One of India’s modern world-class airports built in public-private partnership, it completed 10 years in March, 2018. Designed for a capacity of 12 million, it is currently handling 18 million passengers per annum.

Kishore said Hyderabad had been the fastest growing airport over the last 3-4 years. «In 2015 we celebrated 10 million passengers. We have almost doubled this year and by March next year we would have handled 20 million passengers,» he said.

The expansion works, which will take the overall capacity to 34-40 million passengers, are likely to be completed in 2-3 years. By the time the expansion is completed, the passenger traffic may touch 24-27 million.

Hyderabad Airport had crossed 20% growth in domestic passenger traffic and with international passenger traffic, the airport has been growing at around 20% annually for last three years.

Ljubljana Airport unveils 2019 growth plans

Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport plans to further grow its passenger numbers next year as it prepares to start work on the construction of its new terminal building and drafts plans for the opening of an airport hotel. General Manager, Zmago Skobir, told the «Gorenjski Glas» newspaper, «We are focusing on North Germany, Scandinavia, the former Soviet republics, the Iberian peninsula and Italy. These are destinations that are still missing from our network and we are now getting involved in talks. This year, Adria introduced flights to Hamburg and Dusseldorf, and next year we expect flights to Stockholm. Rome, Madrid and Barcelona also have great potential, but these are very demanding markets where Slovenia is not yet recognisable enough. We are also looking at alternatives for the Middle and Far East through Dubai or Doha, but we have very strong competition for these markets in Zagreb, Belgrade, Venice and Vienna. We have invested a lot of effort to convince carriers that our market is small but of great quality, as well as economically stable».
Mr Skobir noted that the airport is also working on attracting more carriers to operate on existing routes, in order to offer passengers more choice. «We are investing a lot of efforts in attracting new airlines to destinations already covered by one of the carriers. When Transavia introduced flights to Amsterdam, the existing Adria Airways service did not lose passengers. We attracted a completely different market and the number of passengers on this destination has more than doubled. As a domestic carrier in the Netherlands, Transavia is much more recognisable than Adria, which makes it easier to address this market. In addition, this route has opened a new window to the world for our travellers. Amsterdam Airport, as an important transport hub, provides many intercontinental flights mainly to America and Africa», Mr Skobir said. This winter, Aeroflot will introduce a daily service from Moscow to Ljubljana, competing against Adria Airways on the route.
Despite being in close proximately to a number of larger airports, the one in Ljubljana has seen its passenger numbers grow over 9% during the first three quarters of 2018. «There are six major airports in the region. We have strong competition in Zagreb, Venice and Treviso. However, in the last two years, we have recorded greater growth than all of the surrounding airports. We had a difficult period between 2009 and 2012. At the time, figures at Ljubljana Airport declined mainly due to Adria’s restructuring. The national carrier discontinued a third of its flights, which resulted in a big passenger decline for us. It then took three or four years for us to get to the same volume of traffic as before. Today, Adria is stable and contributes almost 60% of all passengers at our airport», Mr Skobir said. He added, «I think that we are successfully fighting for our share in the market, and we are also supported by the favourable economic climate in Slovenia and the increasing visibility of Slovenia as a tourist destination».
Ljubljana Airport’s planned new terminal

Work on the new 10.000 square metre terminal building is expected to begin early next year. It will feature a departures hall with 22 check-in counters, five security lanes, three baggage reclaim carousels, a new baggage sorting area, a large duty free shop, a new premium lounge, as well as new food and beverage facilities. The existing passenger terminal, which stretches over 13.000 square metres, will also be partially renovated. «Work is underway to obtain the necessary permits and by the end of the year a tender will be announced for the construction of the terminal, which will start next year. The facility will be completed in 2020. Furthermore, the development of the surrounding business zone has been enabled with the recent relocation of the road passing by the airport. We will start building internal road infrastructure in the near future, and we have already attracted some investors to build their facilities in the business zone. Negotiations are also underway with a large international chain for the construction of a hotel near the airport», Ljubljana Airport’s General Manager concluded.

Hyderabad Airport expansion kicks in

Hyderabad International Airport is projected to handle 20 million passengers during the current financial year as it embarks on an expansion that will take its overall capacity to 40 million passengers per annum.

To facilitate the expansion works, the airport operator on Wednesday inaugurated interim international departures terminal, which will become operational from Oct 23.

Civil Aviation Secretary R.N. Choubey inaugurated the facility, an exclusive concourse to handle check-in, security, immigration and custom processes for departing international passengers.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd CEO S.G.K. Kishore said the interim terminal with one lakh square feet space was built at a cost of less than Rs 50 crore. Built with pre-engineering technology, the structure has come up in less than seven months.

The interim terminal is aimed at ensuring expansion of the capacity without hampering growth.
