Athens International Airport Expanding Main Terminal to Accommodate Rise in Passengers

Athens International Airport (AIA) is undergoing a small expansion.

The small expansion will help ease passenger flow and allow AIA to better accommodate the rising amount of travelers – as many as 21.7 million people annually.

The 8-million-euro project (without VAT) details expanding the main terminal by 14,950 square meters to the southwest, and is being carried out by Aktor.

Vietnam: Hue airport expansion

The Aviation Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) and local authorities in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue have agreed to invest 95 million USD in the expansion and upgrade of Phu Bai Airport.

The two parties agreed in a meeting on August 28 that the investment would support a construction project of a new terminal and expanding the aircraft’s parking space.

The new terminal, the airport’s second, will be constructed on a total area of 16,500sq.m. It will have two levels to facilitate arrivals and departures. The terminal will include a parking lot and a green park.

The expanded aircraft parking yard will accommodate eight planes at the same time.

ACV will cover the total cost of 2.2 trillion VND (95 million USD) while local authorities will provide clear land for construction.

ACV official Le Xuan Tung said the process of terminal design and contractor selection is ongoing for work to commence by the second quarter of 2019.

According to Phan Ngoc Tho, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, site clearance will begin next month and clear land will be ready for the work in the first quarter of next year.

Construction work is expected to last 18 months.

Once completed, the expanded Phu Bai Airport will accommodate five million passengers a year, one fourth of which foreign visitors.

The airport is the only airline gateway for locals and visitors from Hue to reach Ha Noi, HCM City and Da Lat on daily flights operated by the national carrier Vietnam Airlines and budget carriers Jetstar Pacific and VietJetAir.

Helsinki Airport prepares for Terminal 2 expansion

Finavia has started preparation work at Helsinki Airport for its Terminal 2 expansion, with construction expected to begin in spring 2019.

The first construction sites were set up on August 27 on the Parkkitie road.

The aim of Finavia’s development program is to strengthen Helsinki Airport’s strong competitive position, especially in air traffic between Europe and Asia, and ready itself to serve a projected 30 million passengers.

India: Indore airport gets nod to operate international flights

The civil aviation ministry has given its approval to operate international flights from the city’s Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, a senior airport official said.
The first international flight is expected to start from December after completion of necessary formalities, according to Aryama Sanyal, director, Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport.

Without giving specific information, Sanyal said that Jet Airways has expressed interest in starting international flights from Indore, however, its proposal is awaited.
Currently 44 domestic flights are being operated from the city airport.
