Expansion plans at Budapest airport

“Our infrastructure investments go hand-in-hand with the growth of both passenger traffic and cargo volumes,” says Lammers. “The new 10,000sqm Pier B handed over last year has largely increased the comfort of our passengers flying to and from the non-Schengen destinations. We are planning a whole new series of investments into the airport infrastructure by the year 2024 ranging up to €700 million, including the design and construction of a brand new terminal building next to the existing Terminal 2. This year we will hand over the new Cargo City of 20,000sqm warehouse area that will better serve the needs of the Hungarian export-oriented economy and the logistics companies behind them», says Jost Lammers, CEO Budapest Airport.

Budapest Airport has already launched a programme of internal improvements at both Terminals 2A and 2B in the last two years to increase passenger comfort. In the first half of this year, two more passenger security lanes will be installed, while washrooms, lounges and passenger waiting areas will be refurbished, enlarged or their capacity increased.

Indeed, over €450 million has been invested into developing and modernising the airport and its infrastructure in the last 12 years. The flagship project was the construction of a new central terminal building called SkyCourt, connecting Terminal 2A and 2B, with state-of-the-art passenger security control and baggage systems.

St Lucia: BVI government to engage public on plans to develop airport

The Dr. Orlando Smith-led administration is moving ahead with plans to development the main international airport located on Beef Island.
In a recent press release, the Officer of the Premier said an application has already been admitted to the Town and Country Planning Department and talks about the development will be held with residents on Thursday to discuss the application.

According to the final draft of the ruling National Democratic Party government’s Recovery and Development Plan, the multi-million-dollar development will see the “expansion of the airport runway to 7,100 feet along with the expansion of the apron and terminal building, through public-private partnership where government will manage security and air traffic control while the private firm will finance, build and operate the airport for a period of 25-30 years.”
This application is based on a promise made by Smith that the airport development will see some progress before his time as government leader ends.
Smith’s premiership is expected to end on or before April 16, the deadline for the 2019 General Election to be held.

Influx in passenger arrivals warrants Penang airport expansion

The Penang International Airport marked a 15.21% increase in international passenger arrivals last year compared to 2017, another sign that the airport badly needs to be expanded, the state government said.

From 1.54 million international passengers in 2017, the number increased to 1.78 million last year.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the PIA also recorded passenger traffic of 7.780 million last year which was an increase of 7.59 per cent compared to 7.232 million in 2017.

“These figures suggested that the proposed expansion plan for the PIA is overdue as the passenger traffic had already surpassed the airport capacity of 6.5 million,” he told reporters after a cheque presentation ceremony in Komtar here.

He said the state government is still awaiting “good news” from the federal government and relevant parties on the proposed expansion project.

“There is no final decision on the expansion plans yet, the original proposal by the Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad was to increase the capacity to 12 million passengers,” he said.

He said Putrajaya has revealed that the government is in the process of restructuring all airport concessions and management.

“So we will wait for the federal government decision with regards to how soon the expansion can be carried out,” he said.

He said the expansion is necessary, not only to increase capacity but also to increase direct flights coming into PIA.

“The numbers are increasing each year, without expanding the PIA, we can’t give more slots for direct flights and we can’t attract more airlines to Penang,” he said.

He said Penang aimed to have more direct flights to Penang especially from East Asian countries.

Chow said there were new international direct flights and increased number of flights connecting to Penang in 2018.

“As of November 2018, there were a total 283 international direct flights per week to Penang, which is a 21.9 per cent growth from the previous year of 232 flights,” he said.

The new direct flights introduced last year were to Hanoi and Phuket by AirAsia, Doha by Qatar Airways, Banda Acheh and Nanning by Malindo Airline and Jakarta and Surabaya by Citilink.

The flights with increased frequencies were to Hong Kong, Doha, Taipei, Phuket and Jakarta.
