China plans to build 3 more airports in Tibet

China plans to build three new airports in Tibet in addition to the five existing ones to promote tourism and economic growth, official media reported.

The new airports will be in Shannan, Xigaze and Ali, according the regional government and the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

Ali is part of Ngari prefecture of Tibet where Mount Kailash and Manasarovar Hindu holy sites are located.
Construction of the three airports, all above the altitude of 3,900 metres, should begin in 2019, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Capital Airport Holding Company will be responsible for the construction of the airport in Shannan, Shanghai Airport Authority for the airport in Xigaze and West Airport Group for Ali.

The three companies are scheduled to transfer the airports to local operators after one or two years of operation.

Currently, Tibet has five civil airports in Lhasa, Qamdo, Nyingchi, Ali and Xigaze, with nine airlines operating 86 routes, including an international one.

Chile: Santiago airport expansion faces delays

Chile’s public works minister, Juan Andrés Fontaine, expressed concern regarding the delays in the ongoing US$650mn expansion of Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez airport after the concessionaire in charge requested a deadline extension.

Consorcio Nuevo Pudahuel, which won the airport concession in 2015, alerted the country’s concessions panel that the public works ministry (MOP) was behind schedule for revising and approving the designs for the expansion, resulting in delays. The consortium added, however, that the process has gathered pace since the new government took office last March.

Now, the concessionaire requested a deadline extension, from November 2020 to June 2021.

The airport is operating above its maximum capacity of 15mn passengers per year, and while the ongoing expansion would increase capacity to 30mn, the airport will be close to that number once the current works are complete.
