$115 million expansion project announced for Fresno airport

Big changes are coming to Fresno Yosemite International Airport.

On Thursday, officials announced a $115 million expansion project.

Officials tell me the airport is bursting at the seams and this expansion project can’t come soon enough.

Every year the airport seems to break new records for the amount of travelers that come through the terminals.

«We’re continuing to experience significant growth and we are foretasted to this growth trend and are looking to the future so this is why we’re looking forward to expand these facilities,» said spokesperson Vikki Calderon.

Beginning in early 2021, the airport will break ground on its biggest expansion project ever – one that will include an upper-level concourse as well as a new international arrivals facility and a three story parking garage.

Completion is expected by the fall of 2022.

«The project will be covered by airport revenue sources,» Calderon said.

Airport officials say FYI has experienced 45 percent growth in passenger traffic since 2010 and each year continues to outpace previous numbers.

«It’s an exciting great time and we’ve got the finances to expand the terminal the parking facilities and its just going to be more and more convenient,» said Fresno councilmember Paul Caprioglio.

Caprioglio worked closely with airport officials to get the project off the ground.

The expansion program is expected to generate $182 million in economic activity.

«We’re getting larger aircraft, more frequent flights, economic stimulus for the area, millions of dollars generated by the airport and the airport is self-sustaining.

The money they generate stays in the airport to allow for this continuous growth.

The project will also expand security checkpoints and add concession space to the airport.

Bulgaria extends deadline again for Sofia airport tender

Bulgaria has delayed the deadline for bids to run Sofia’s airport for a fourth time to April 3, the transport ministry said on Friday, after potential bidders asked for more time.

The ministry has repeatedly offered extensions from the original Oct. 22 deadline for the 35-year concession.

The centre-right government relaunched the tender for Bulgaria’s main air hub in July and wants to raise 550 million euros ($630 million) from the deal.

Oakland airport kicks off food concession makeover after 10 year-high passenger count

The East Bay airport funneled nearly 13.6 million passengers through its terminals last year, the highest count since 2007 and a 4 percent bump compared to the prior year. The increase was due to the addition of new routes that boosted the number of OAK’s nonstop destinations to 67 — the highest in the airport’s 91-year history.

The airport’s previous record continues to be 2007, when it saw 14.6 million passengers.

To keep the momentum, the airport will kick off an extensive overhaul to its food and beverage concessions program. Throughout the year, OAK will roll out openings for a string of local purveyors including Brown Sugar Kitchen’s Tanya Holland, Farley’s, Drake’s Brewing, Red Bay Coffee, and A16, among others. The new vendors were approved by the Port of Oakland last year as part of four concession packages that included spaces for 17 tenants in Terminals 1 and 2.

“We remain optimistic about the future as the airport continues to expand its air service reach and makes great strides in enhancing the overall customer experience here,» Bryant Francis, the director of aviation for the Port of Oakland said in a statement.

Concessions are a significant revenue generator for airports, and officials are realizing a solid food program has a direct impact on travelers’ experiences. Revenue from food and beverage programs accounted for 38 percent of the nearly $2 billion in concession revenue reported in 2017, according to the Airports Council International-North America.

OAK’s emphasis on local vendors is similar to the strategy San Francisco International Airport has deployed and is already reaping benefits from. Airport Director Ivar Satero recently said 87 percent of SFO’s food and beverage leases and almost 60 percent of its retail tenants have local San Francisco Bay Area owners.

At SFO, food and beverage sales raked in more than $241 million in 2016, more than half of the $368 million the airport’s concessions program made that year.
