Bangladesh: Tender for 3rd terminal at HSIA next month


Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) will float tender next month to construct the much-awaited 3rd terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka, reports BSS.

The construction work of the new terminal will be completed by 2022 with an estimated cost of Tk 13,610.47 crore under the financial assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

After completion of the terminal, passenger handling capacity of the country’s major airport will increase to 20 from 8 million and cargo handling capacity to 5 from 2 lakh tonnes annually.

The airport is anticipated to witness passenger traffic of approximately 12 million by August 2022 and up to 22 million by 2035, according to CAAB’s official data.

The expansion will include the construction of the third passenger terminal building known as Terminal 3, as well as a 5,900 square meters VVIP complex, 41,200 square meters cargo building and multi-level car parking building with tunnel, officials said.

The new international passenger terminal building is set to have a floor area of roughly 226,000 square meters.

Additionally, the project will see the construction of several exit and connecting taxiways, a parking apron in Terminal 3, new roads to connect the terminal with the airport road and a drainage system.

Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport began operations in 1980 and is situated on an 802ha site in Kurmitola, north of the capital Dhaka. Currently, the airport has one domestic terminal and two international terminals with a maximum capacity of eight million passengers a year.

Athens International Airport Expanding Main Terminal to Accommodate Rise in Passengers

Athens International Airport (AIA) is undergoing a small expansion.

The small expansion will help ease passenger flow and allow AIA to better accommodate the rising amount of travelers – as many as 21.7 million people annually.

The 8-million-euro project (without VAT) details expanding the main terminal by 14,950 square meters to the southwest, and is being carried out by Aktor.

Nepal: a letter of intent (LoI) to finalise the construction modality of Nijgadh International Airport.

A meeting held among the top officials of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) and Ministry of Finance (MoF) yesterday have jointly decided to seek a letter of intent (LoI) to finalise the construction modality of Nijgadh International Airport.

The LoI notice will call upon interested domestic and international firms to submit construction modalities of the planned second international airport in Nepal.

According to Devkota, Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada, Tourism Minister Rabindra Adhikari, secretary and high-level officials of MoF, Investment Board Nepal, National Planning Commission, CAAN, and Nepal Airlines Corporation had participated in the meeting, in which various aspects of the project were discussed to dispel any confusion related to it.

Earlier, the government had handed over the responsibility to secure the construction site of the airport to Nepali Army.

On May 25, Ministry of Forests and Environment had approved the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report of Nijgadh International Airport, which was then forwarded to the MoCTCA.

According to the EIA report, the government plans to cut down 2.4 million trees to build the much-talked-about international airport.

On May 11, MoF had suggested the MoCTCA to build the Nijgadh International Airport in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Vietnam: Hue airport expansion

The Aviation Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) and local authorities in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue have agreed to invest 95 million USD in the expansion and upgrade of Phu Bai Airport.

The two parties agreed in a meeting on August 28 that the investment would support a construction project of a new terminal and expanding the aircraft’s parking space.

The new terminal, the airport’s second, will be constructed on a total area of 16,500sq.m. It will have two levels to facilitate arrivals and departures. The terminal will include a parking lot and a green park.

The expanded aircraft parking yard will accommodate eight planes at the same time.

ACV will cover the total cost of 2.2 trillion VND (95 million USD) while local authorities will provide clear land for construction.

ACV official Le Xuan Tung said the process of terminal design and contractor selection is ongoing for work to commence by the second quarter of 2019.

According to Phan Ngoc Tho, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, site clearance will begin next month and clear land will be ready for the work in the first quarter of next year.

Construction work is expected to last 18 months.

Once completed, the expanded Phu Bai Airport will accommodate five million passengers a year, one fourth of which foreign visitors.

The airport is the only airline gateway for locals and visitors from Hue to reach Ha Noi, HCM City and Da Lat on daily flights operated by the national carrier Vietnam Airlines and budget carriers Jetstar Pacific and VietJetAir.
